Happy Sunday and happy Spring! While it may still be freezing here in DC, in my mind I'm running through a flower field toward summer. Hopefully DC can catch up to my mental image sooner rather than later. Rather than a money diary, because I had a cheap weekend after dropping an colossal amount of money on a new iPhone after mine died this week (RIP but it was a 6s so like it was time), I've come up with a list for you.
In no particular order, I will leave you with a both serious and amusing list of things I’ve noticed or realized thus far in my short time as an adult.
- The amount of time the sun is out: Leaving work only to run from your desk outside and find out the sun is down is hands-down the worst feeling. Especially when you sit in a room without windows all day! Having some extra sunlight once you’re done with work for the day makes it feel less like you’re slaving away all day, showing up to work when the sun is rising and leaving when it is setting, and more like you actually have a life.
- That working out in the morning just makes more sense: Yes, getting up early for work typically sucks, and it’s even more annoying when you get up earlier than that to work out. But the feeling of coming home from work and knowing you don’t have to workout or can have plans rather than your M-F plans be ‘the gym’ is pretty great.
- Calling your friends is key: Friends from college who no longer live near you isn’t ideal. I find that when I text my friends, our conversations are half-developed as we’re both distracted with work and life. However, calling my friends (and usually going for a long walk while doing so) gives us undivided attention and is a longer, more meaningful conversation than texting sporadically.
- How dirty your living space gets: Dust. EVERYWHERE. I’m looking at my blinds right now and even they are dusty. Does anyone even know how to clean blinds?
- The price of food: You bet your frugal ass I look up and down my grocery receipt each week and see what was most expensive. Typically, it’s meat, which is partly why I’m trying to consume less of it, but other contenders include nut butter, sauces/dips, nuts, and protein bars.
- You can let work run your life if you’re not careful: Signing up for extra responsibilities means an extra 15 hours/week for you, so maybe think that over before you become a ‘yes’ person. Even when it comes to day-to-day responsibilities, set boundaries. What I do that works for me so far is have commitments scheduled during the week nights so I have to leave by a certain time; otherwise I’ll get pulled into stuff and be there until 8 every night. No thank you!
- An angel loses its wings each time you pay rent: Nothing further here, folks.
- Doing laundry becomes less of a chore and more of a relief: Each time I wash my towels, sheets, and clothes I feel like my life is 15% more together (scientifically backed!). Getting out of the shower to be cuddled by a warm, fresh-smelling towel makes the pain of laundry worth it (mostly).
- Childhood hobbies are fun: Writing painting, reading, and baking are all things I enjoyed when I was younger and didn’t have much time for in college; but now when I have free time I naturally gravitate toward those activities because of the joy and satisfaction they bring me.
- Time off is sacred: Don’t try to reach me when I’m on PTO if you work with me, because there is a 0/100 chance I’m checking my work phone and laptop. Moreover, I’ve become incredibly strategic about how I schedule and use my PTO - almost as if it’s a game, to see how I can maximize it. For example, I’d rather take off on a Monday than a Friday if I’m going to see family because Friday’s are more lax and Monday’s usually blow. It's all a mental game.
